Official statistics: 51,727 businesses in Austria according to Statistics Austria, structural business statistics 2024 (table G_UNT1) (reference year 2024, table created 30 June 2026). Division 47 retail trade (53,630) excluding pharmacies (47.73: 1,495) and retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods (47.74: 408). What counts as Retail and online retail

The industry corresponds to ÖNACE division 47 without pharmacies (47.73) and retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods (47.74); these have an industry of their own. Mail order and internet retail (47.91) is included.

Retailers with a shop and an additional online store are listed under their main class, not under 47.91. If you are looking for online retailers, filter by website rather than by class only.

No retailer register, but a legal notice duty for online shops

Most retail trades do not require a certificate of competence. There is no industry register.

GISA
Retailers hold a trade licence that is recorded in GISA and can be searched individually via the GISA search.
Online shops
Anyone running an online shop must state, under § 5 ECG, their name or company name, geographical address, email address and, where applicable, register number and VAT ID. This is where the details in the export come from.
Chains
Retail chains have many locations. The export usually shows the business with its address as given in the source; branches are not guaranteed as separate records.

Not in the export

  • sales area and turnover
  • branches of individual chains
  • depth of range and brands
  • names of store managers and buyers
  • shop system and payment provider

These 15 columns are included.

Range and location: what the class shows

ÖNACE classifies retailers by their main range. A sports shop with a bicycle workshop is in 47.64 (sporting equipment), not in repair. If you are looking for a particular range, name the class.

For location planning and territory analysis the address is crucial. For chains, the company seat is often not where goods are sold.

Marketing emails to online shops require prior consent, even if the address is in the legal notice (§ 174(3) TKG 2021).

Questions

Retail and online retail: frequently asked questions

Yes. Pure mail order and online retailers are in 47.91; retailers with a shop and an online store are under their main class. Making the website a required field captures both.

Pharmacies (47.73) are not; they have an industry of their own. Opticians are statistically in class 47.78 and therefore included here; the industry Pharmacies, opticians, hearing care and orthopaedic suppliers brings them together specifically.

Only with prior consent (§ 174(3) TKG 2021). The address in the legal notice is not consent. Details: B2B marketing and § 174 TKG 2021.
